Theatre Project "Nothing"

Date

April 2024

Mentor

Kristel Maamägi

The visuals I created for the theatre production "Nothing" were a real challenge for me. At that time, I felt completely drained of creativity, so the planning and thought process took an enormous amount of time. Then, at one point, a sketchy image of what the stage design could look like appeared in my mind. I quickly drew it on paper, and from there, a massive snowball started rolling.

I learned that sometimes, in order for your subconscious to start forming its own vision, you need to thoroughly explore every aspect of the play. Patience leads to results, and the process I went through was incredibly important for me in terms of understanding myself better.

"In a small Danish town, a new school year begins. On the very first day, one of the boys declares that nothing matters, climbs up into a plum tree, and refuses to come down—terrorizing his classmates with his new worldview. They have no choice but to prove to him that there are things that matter. That life does, in fact, have meaning.
The youth novel by contemporary Danish author Janne Teller, translated into many languages, deals with growing pains, identity, and the dissection of values. About the passion to hold on to joy and friendship, and the rage toward those who try to take it away. It's a hunt for meaning—forgetting that the hunt usually ends with the death of the hunted.
If I give everything I have—does that mean that’s everything? Or is it, in fact… nothing?"
